Export packaging checklist for Ethiopian exporters

Goods exported from Ethiopia usually travel by road or rail to Djibouti before going by sea, so export cartons need board strong enough for stacking and humidity, the right information printed on the outside, and pallets that meet ISPM 15 if they are made of wood. This checklist covers the route, the board, the size, the marks and the pallets.

Key facts

Plan the packaging around the route

More than 95% of Ethiopia’s trade passes through Djibouti. Most export cargo travels there on the 759 km Addis Ababa to Djibouti railway, which opened in 2018 and was built to cut the trip from about three days by road to about twelve hours, or by truck. From Djibouti it goes on by sea. That means an export carton is loaded and unloaded several times, stacked in containers and warehouses, and exposed to heat and humidity at the port. Design the box for the hardest part of that trip, not for the factory floor.

Choose board that survives stacking and humidity

Heavy goods and long routes usually call for 5-ply (double wall) board. Humidity is the hidden risk: corrugated board that absorbs moisture loses compression strength, so boxes at the bottom of a stack in a humid port or cold store can crush. Tell your carton supplier the weight per box, the stacking height and the route, and ask for a sample to test with a real load.

Size the carton to the product and the pallet

A carton should hold the product firmly, without empty space that lets it move and without squeezing it. Measure the inside dimensions you need (length × width × height, in millimetres) and check how many cartons fit on a pallet and in the container. A few millimetres per box can decide whether a pallet layer fits without overhang, and overhanging boxes lose much of their stacking strength.

What to print on an export carton

Buyers, customs and the people handling the cargo all read the outside of the box. Agree the exact marks with your buyer and freight forwarder; these are the usual ones.

  1. Your company name and address, and the buyer’s name and destination.
  2. Product name, quantity per carton, and net and gross weight.
  3. Batch or lot number and production date where your buyer asks for them.
  4. Country of origin: Made in Ethiopia.
  5. Handling symbols: this way up, fragile, keep dry, stacking limit.
  6. The buyer’s own marks and carton number (for example 1 of 400).

Pallets and ISPM 15

If goods travel on wooden pallets or in wooden crates, the wood must meet ISPM 15, the international standard for wood packaging. It requires the wood to be treated, most often by heat treatment that holds the core of the wood at 56 °C for at least 30 minutes, and to carry the official ISPM 15 mark. Paper and corrugated packaging is not covered by ISPM 15, but the pallet under it is.

Questions

What should be printed on an export carton from Ethiopia?

Usually: your company name and address, the buyer and destination, product name and quantity, net and gross weight, batch or lot number, "Made in Ethiopia", handling symbols and the buyer’s carton numbering. Agree the exact marks with your buyer.

Do cardboard cartons need ISPM 15 treatment?

No. ISPM 15 covers wood packaging such as pallets and crates. The cartons do not need it, but a wooden pallet carrying them must be treated and marked.

How long does the train from Addis Ababa to Djibouti take?

The 759 km electric railway, opened in 2018, was built to cut the trip from about three days by road to about twelve hours.

Why do export cartons collapse in cold stores?

Corrugated board absorbs moisture in cold and humid conditions and loses compression strength. Stronger board, usually 5-ply, and correct stacking give the margin needed.
