3-ply or 5-ply carton: which one do you need?

A 3-ply (single wall) carton has one fluted layer between two liners and suits light to medium goods and short trips. A 5-ply (double wall) carton has two fluted layers and three liners, so it is stiffer and stacks higher: choose it for heavy goods, tall stacks, long or rough routes, humid stores and export. Eastern Dragon makes both in Addis Ababa.

What is the difference between a 3-ply and a 5-ply carton?

Corrugated board is built in layers. A 3-ply board has three: a flat liner, a wavy fluted layer, and a second flat liner. A 5-ply board adds a second fluted layer and a third liner, which is why it is also called double wall. The extra layers make 5-ply board thicker, stiffer and more resistant to crushing. That strength costs more board, so a 5-ply box is heavier and more expensive than a 3-ply box of the same size.

When is a 3-ply carton enough?

A 3-ply carton is the right choice for most light and medium goods: food and consumer products, retail shipping, textiles and garments, and boxes that are stacked only a few high for a short time. It also takes print well, so it is the usual choice for branded boxes that go to shops. If your boxes travel a short distance, stay in a dry store and are not stacked very high, paying for 5-ply board rarely adds anything.

When do you need a 5-ply carton?

Choose 5-ply when the load or the journey is hard on the box: heavy contents such as ceramic tiles, oil containers, machinery parts or bulk food; tall stacks on pallets or in warehouses; long routes, such as road or rail to Djibouti and sea freight; and cold stores or humid conditions. Moisture matters more than many buyers expect. Corrugated board that absorbs moisture loses compression strength, so a box that stands up well in a dry store can collapse in a cold room. The extra wall of 5-ply board gives a margin for that.

Which flute goes with which board?

The flute is the wavy middle layer. Its size changes how thick the board is, how well it cushions and how well it takes print. The figures below are the usual international flute sizes; a 5-ply board combines two flutes, most often B and C together.

B fluteabout 3.2 mmGood print surface and resistance to punctures

How is carton strength measured?

Three tests are common. The edge crush test (ECT) measures the force the board can take along its edge and predicts how much weight a box will carry when stacked. The box compression test (BCT) measures that directly, by crushing a finished box. The burst test measures the pressure needed to rupture the board, which relates to rough handling. You do not need to specify these numbers yourself. Tell your supplier what goes in the box, how heavy it is, how high the boxes are stacked and where they travel, and ask which board meets that.

How to decide in five steps

These five questions settle the choice for almost every product.

  1. Weigh one full box.
  2. Count how many boxes high they are stacked, in your store and on the truck.
  3. Note the route: across town, across the country, or to Djibouti and beyond.
  4. Note the conditions: dry store, cold store, or humid port.
  5. Ask for a sample in the board you are considering and test it with a real load.

Questions

Is a 5-ply carton always better than a 3-ply carton?

No. A 5-ply carton is stronger, but it is also heavier and costs more. For light goods on short, dry routes a 3-ply carton does the job, and paying for 5-ply board adds cost without adding value.

Does a 5-ply box cost more than a 3-ply box?

Yes. A 5-ply box uses more board (two fluted layers and three liners instead of one and two), so it costs more than a 3-ply box of the same size.

What is a 7-ply carton?

A 7-ply (triple wall) carton has three fluted layers and four liners. It is used for very heavy industrial loads; most everyday goods, including most export goods, are packed in 3-ply or 5-ply cartons.

Which is better for export cartons, 3-ply or 5-ply?

Usually 5-ply. Export boxes are stacked high and travel long routes, often through humid ports and cold stores, where board loses strength. Light export goods can still travel in 3-ply boxes; test a sample with a real load.
